Columbia County, NY Cemeteries and Burial Grounds
Cliff Lamere Nov & Dec 2000; table at end revised 1 May 2010
These cemeteries and burial grounds are found in books in the collection of the Columbia County Historical Society. Lawrence V. Rickard created full name indices to 33 of the books, then merged them into one master index containing over 60,000 names. After selecting a book number and page number found in that Columbia County master cemetery list, you may be able to determine the name and location of the burial place by referring to the data below. It required seven trips to the Society for me to determine which cemetery was represented on every page of the 33 books.
Book Numbers - In 2000, the Columbia Co. Historical Society had cemetery books numbered from 1-51a. The Rickard master cemetery index for Columbia Co. contains data from 33 of those books, all of which are listed on this webpage. Most of the remainder were for other counties, had their own full name index, or were for Hudson. At the time that Mr. Rickard was making the book indices, a new publication of the Hudson cemetery records was anticipated. It would have replaced the books that the Society had at that time. However, it was never released.
To view a list of cemetery books at CCHS in 2009 not included in the Rickard master index, click HERE, or go to the bottom of the webpage. The list will help you understand what else might be available, in case you wanted to make a research inquiry at CCHS. All of the books are for Hudson, Kinderhook (duplicates records can be found in other books), and areas outside Columbia Co., except for 3 handwritten sets of scattered cemetery records for Columbia Co. (I don't know what areas they cover.)
Page Numbers - 1 to 4 small burial grounds can appear on a page. If a person's name is listed for a certain book and page number, you must cursor down to the book number and determine how many burial grounds are on that page. If there is only one, you will know the name and location of the burial ground. If there is more than one, you may want to request a copy of the page from the CCHS.
Cemetery and Burial Ground Names - Most of the burial grounds and cemeteries do not have official names. The transcribers had to invent some sort of description. If a burial ground is named after the owner of a farm in 1920, the name may not be meaningful today. However, the farm information could be useful to someone who made the effort to relocate the burial ground.
Locations - I have kept locations rather simple, although some burial grounds were located much more specifically in the cemetery books. My purpose was to give the viewer the general location, not the lengthy description that would help a person find the burial ground today. For that, you could contact CCHS and see if more complete directions are available. Small burial grounds usually had fairly good directions.
Year Copied and Year Published - This information is provided so that you can get an idea of the age of the directions. Farms may now have new owners. Some road names may even have changed their names or route numbers.
Alphabetical or Non-alphabetical - If a cemetery or burial ground occupied more than one page, I have indicated whether the listing of the gravestone was in alphabetical or non-alphabetical order. Non-alphabetical listings are more likely to show family relationships in a cemetery. You might check for people of the same surname on the page before and the page after a person that interests you. A family group could occupy more than one page, although I believe that the transcribers tried to avoid that situation.
Life Dates - For this information, you must contact the Columbia County Historical Society for a copy of the page on which a name occurred.
Who Else by that Surname was Buried Nearby? - Once you locate someone that interests you, note the book number and page number. Next, check the list of cemeteries and determine whether the names were listed alphabetically or not. If they are alphabetical, there is nothing you can do except contact CCHS for a copy of the page. However, if they are arranged non-alphabetically (or no designation is given because it is a tiny cemetery), then you can browse down the list of people who had that surname, looking for the same page number in the same book. There is a good chance that all of the people of the same surname on a single page will be together in one family plot. However, I have seen cases where there are two or three separate plots for that surname on a single page. If you have any doubt, you must see the actual page. For that, you can contact CCHS. [Note: It is not normal for a single family plot to be split apart and placed on two pages.]

Copies - The Columbia County Historical Society has agreed to make copies of pages from the cemetery books for a small fee. If you supply the name and book number by mail, including a stamped, self-addressed envelope, they will send you a photocopy of the requested page for $5. For additional names requested at the same time, the fee will be an additional $3 per page. Each photocopied page will have the cemetery's name handwritten on it. Payment is requested in advance (personal check or money order).

Multiple listings for a single name - There may be several listings for an identical name. Check cemetery names and locations to determine how many people are represented. The location may help you decide which is most likely to be the one for whom you are looking. If there is more than one transcription for the same person, you may want to order all of them. My experience shows that the dates in two books disagree with each other more often than a person would wish. If there are three transcriptions, you would probably want all three records to have the best chance of getting an accurate date. Differences could be due to typographical errors or the difficulty in reading the gravestone inscriptions.
Multiple listings for a single person - Since a cemetery transcription might have been done by more than one genealogist and therefore appear in more than one book, a certain person may appear two or three times in the Rickard master cemetery index for Columbia Co. A person's name may also appear more than once on a page if their own burial record is on that page, and they were also mentioned as a relative of other people buried in the same family plot.

Hint on How to Use This Cemetery List
1) Print out the whole thing if you are going to refer to it often. For a copy which cuts off the last three columns and lets the information fit better on a regular sheet of paper (portrait arrangement), click HERE.
2) See important note above with the title, "Who Else by that Surname was Buried Nearby? ".

The following table is a list of cemetery books at CCHS in 2009 that are not included in the Lawrence Rickard master index which was created around 1994. Some cemetery books did not exist at that time. All Columbia County cemetery books that had not been indexed by Rickard were indexed for the Society by Fred Saar in 2008 and 2009. CCHS has a copy of the Rickard Index and the Saar Index available for use by visiting researchers.
